The University of Leoben, Chair of Mining Science, Mining Engineering and Mining Technology, has signed the contract for a new triple-degree Master's program with RWTH Aachen University, Institute of Mineral Resources Engineering, and Aalto University.

The European Mining Course (EMC) is an exchange master's program established through the international cooperation of three leading mining universities in Europe - namely Montanuniversität Leoben (Austria), Aalto University (Finland) and RWTH Aachen University (Germany).

During the two-year EMC master's program, students spend one semester (equivalent to 30 ECTS credits) at each of the three universities. The last semester is dedicated to writing the master's thesis, and students are free to choose at which university they would like to complete this semester. The master's thesis can also be written in collaboration with companies or enterprises in the mining industry, but must still be supervised by a teacher from one of the three universities.

The EMC covers all aspects of the mineral resource life cycle. It provides a sound understanding of the global mining industry and takes a life-cycle approach by covering the entire mining value chain. It provides state-of-the-art technical foundations for deposit modeling, mine planning, and economic evaluation. The technical knowledge is complemented by knowledge transfer in business administration, ethics, environmental engineering, and a well-defined and structured teaching program for health, safety and environmental management. Through guest lectures from industry, field trips and industrial projects, students gain direct insight into the international mining industry and make valuable contacts for their future careers.

Graduates of the EMC can work in the mining industry, in government organizations and in research institutions. In this context, they hold key positions in a wide range of areas from research, teaching and consulting to management and design, project development and controlling. Their numerous work experiences in international groups and in an international environment make them desirable workers for global companies from all over the world. The program enjoys the full support of the mining industry and has a broad, active alumni network.
