"Universities bear special responsibility for global, national and local sustainable developments. They have the potential to be important drivers of sustainability transformation for society as a whole." (Positionspapier HOCHN - Nachhaltigkeit an Hochschulen)

The issues of sustainable development and climate change are becoming increasingly important in the face of mounting problems. Extreme weather events such as hurricanes, droughts and floods are already impacting all regions of the world. The demand for the earth's resources is increasing as in no previous age - and this despite the fact that most of them are only available in limited quantities. Sustainability means managing resources in the interests of future generations and affects all areas of our lives and economies - and is thus a task for society as a whole. Accordingly, RWTH Aachen University, as a major technical university, is also committed to sustainable development in the sense of the German sustainability strategy.

The subject of sustainability has been the focus of the Division of Mineral Resources and Raw Materials Engineering for many years. In the area of teaching, for example, the bachelor's degree program "Sustainable Resources and Energy Supply" was introduced in the winter semester 20218/19, which is intended to provide our students with targeted training and enable them to develop sustainable strategies for raw materials and energy supply in the interests of resource conservation.

In the area of research and development, the FRE's spectrum is also shifting in focus, pursuing the goal of finding sustainable solutions to current and future challenges. In this context, a multidisciplinary, broadly networked approach is becoming increasingly important.

In the coming months, we would like to take this opportunity to present some of our projects in more detail, which are particularly concerned with the topic of sustainability and thus make a contribution in the sense of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.
