The primary extraction of mineral resources is indispensable and a supporting pillar for social prosperity and the transformation of the economy and society toward a sustainable and climate-friendly society. The extraction of these mineral resources is becoming increasingly challenging, both due to the complexity of the deposits and extraction operations, as well as with regard to the emissions of the operations themselves and increasing expectations of investors and consumers for the implementation of comprehensive sustainability criteria. In this respect, mining, which is developing into a high-tech industry with a high degree of automation and digital technologies, has a central role to play in realizing the socio-economic transformation toward climate neutrality.

Digitalization, automation and electrification represent the key technological trends that are currently transforming industrial mining in profound ways.

This is precisely where the work of the Institute for Advanced Mining Technologies (AMT) comes in. Through research, teaching and transfer, the AMT makes an important contribution to safe, efficient and responsible resource extraction by developing technologies and approaches for the automation, digitalization and electrification of mining machines and processes. To achieve these goals, a team of about 15 scientific staff members from different disciplines, work in an open and constructive atmosphere on the development of robust sensor technologies and data analysis methods that are able to withstand the harsh environmental conditions of mining. The team is complemented by administrative staff, a mechanical and electrical workshop, and a large number of student and research assistants. The Institute for Advanced Mining Technologies (AMT) at RWTH Aachen University has been headed by Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Elisabeth Clausen since March 2018.

With our activities, we are not only distinguished as a recognized research partner nationwide, but also part of the national and European cutting-edge research within Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe and EIT KIC Raw Materials projects as well as research projects funded by the BMBF and BMWK.

In addition to research and development, the core tasks include teaching in the engineering courses "Mineral Resources Engineering" and "Sustainable Resources and Energy Supply" with the respective specializations. The AMT supervises the students of these courses in numerous lectures and exercises on the fundamentals of mechanical and electrical engineering as well as in numerous application-related courses in the field of mechanical engineering for raw material extraction.
