Application of Innovative Teaching- and Learning Concepts in Mining Engineering Education
CDIO is short for Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate, a framework and set of guidelines based on 12 standards for the evaluation and continuous improvement of teaching in contemporary engineering education. CDIO provides and innovative pedagogical framework and approach to better prepare future engineers for the labor market of tomorrow.
The objective of CDIO is to enable graduates in engineering to conceive, design, implement and operate complex value chains of technical systems in partly interdisciplinary team settings. Interlocking strong engineering fundamentals with real world problems and applications are at the core of the CDIO approach.
The Institute for Advanced Mining Technologies (AMT) is a project partner in the CDIO II project (2018-2019), which applies the CDIO principles to education in mining and mineral engineering. CDIO II is a successor of the CDIO in Raw Materials Sector project, both funded by EIT Raw Materials. CDIO II continues and intensifies the measures identified in the first project phase.
The consortium for CDIO II consists of seven project partners from four European countries, which cover all aspects of the knowledge triangle – industry, academia and research institutions – and which contribute different but complimentary competencies and experiences to the project. Aside from AMT at RWTH Aachen University, the Chalmers University of Technology (Coordinator), Luleå University of Technology, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, University of Limerick, Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB) and RISE Research Institutes of Sweden AB are partners in this project.
- Development of an interactive map for innovative learning environments in mining engineering
- Implementation of a common project course in which students from Madrid, Gothenburg, Aachen and Lulea work in teams on a challenge posed by industry
- Development of guidelines for the development and implementation of innovative learning environments, including new visualization tools such as augmented reality
- Continuation of faculty development courses at different partner universities based on the insights gained during the first project phase
